The movie 3 Idiots is one of the best movies that I have ever watched. The plot of the story talks about 3 different students with different circumstances undergoing challenges, hardships while studying in an Engineering School. It has a touch of reality because most of us can relate to what they have been through in the movie. Most people who are in the field of Engineering and Information Technology can definitely relate to what Rancho, Farhan, Raju and all the students who have been through there in the story. You can’t really deny the hardships, the pressure, the stress and the things they’ve been through is the same as what others students are undergoing right at the moment. It is really true that students are under the same circumstances all over the world and maybe they are getting more and more every day. And in this movie these different students have been portrayed by 3 quiet different individuals. There are 3 main characters which was the basis of the title namely; Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi and Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chhanchad or simply “Rancho”.

Farhan Qureshi is one of the main characters of the story or one of the idiots. He was just one of the many students in that school, in short he was normal. He lived by simply following the rules and doesn’t bother to break it. In the movie he was constantly obeying the wishes of his father, by pursuing engineering. He was afraid to disobey his father knowing that they had suffered enough for him, sacrificing their wants just to give Farhan a comfortable studying life. Even though Farhan has a great passion for wildlife photography he had set it aside just for the happiness of his father. He followed the will of his father even though he doesn’t want to be an engineer. He did it just to make his father happy even if he is very unhappy with what he is really doing. However, I can’t also blame him since his family has given up a lot just so he can live that life he was living. At the same time he wasn’t really asking that kind of life because all he wants was to be able to do what he really love, what he really was passionate about. His character was portraying a character which can be commonly seen in real life. He was a son who was willing to follow the wishes of his parents just so that they will be happy, compromising what he really wants. Some people think this way. They are giving others what they want just to see them happy. Even though they don’t like what they are doing or should I say it’s not their passion they would still do it for the people they love. What these people misses is that they are setting aside what they really love. They won’t be able to give it their all since it’s not a work coming from the heart. All their efforts are half-baked because it’s not a profession they choose. When a person is forced to do something they tend to challenge what they are doing, they don’t do things perfectly. It’s like they are rebelling in some ways showing that they don’t approve of what they were forced to do. I think I could say the same. I think I’ve been the same way. When I don’t like to do something I tend to rebel and get naughty, by not following or doing it later instead of doing it earlier. However, if you did it just so you can make your parents happy or satisfied then it’s either you’d be selfish or you would be selfless. And that’s what Farhan was choosing, he thought he was done with it but when he met Rancho he ended up second guessing his first decision.

After meeting Rancho in their first night in the dorms, his character has started to be amazed as to how Rancho can do things, things which he can’t even dare to do in his life. He was a very weird person and somewhat eccentric compared to other students going to their college. He was so curious and awed that Rancho can do things his way without even having second thoughts about it. He can be a handful and the teachers get really angry with him, but I guess that’s one of the things why Farhan was drawn to him. Rancho’s ways has completely made him his good friend, seeing how good of a person he is by constantly helping others, such as Millimeter, to go to school. He encouraged Millimeter to go to school even when he isn’t enrolled just by wearing a uniform and silently sitting in class. That was one of the few things Rancho can suggest which can be quiet clever and unlawful. And, as a fellow roommate the three of them are always together, Farhan, Rancho and Raju. He has been a loyal friend to both Rancho and Raju. Even if things have gone rough he was constantly staying by their sides supporting both of them. He gets scolded the same way as the other two. And, he gets into trouble just like the other two. Even when he was already warned by Virus, their Director that he might get into trouble because of Rancho’s naughtiness if he doesn’t move out and stay away from Rancho, he didn’t bulge and has continued to be with Rancho anyway. He likes to be around Rancho because only Rancho can be the most normal person even when everything is going haywire. Farhan sometimes tolerate Rancho and help him do mischievous things, which have done good benefit for their friend Raju to help him realize something. He did something both with Rancho and Raju where they got drunk and almost got caught in class drinking. He understands both Rancho and Raju, he was the balance between the two. He is a happy person and goes with the flow. Farhan laughs at Rancho for being like he is, sometimes naïve and when he does comical things or actions. In his academics, he was barely passing his exams and is always last, due to having a different passion. He once said that, having barely passing grades makes him sad but having your best friend makes to the top had made him feel worst, since Rancho made it first. Both him and Raju are getting low grades and he can’t really get the slightest idea how Rancho be at the top even though he was a very mischievous person, but he also knows for a fact that Rancho is a very special person and very smart. After a few turn out of events, his character hasn’t changed he was as constant as ever. One time when Rancho had sent his works to a known photographer a new opportunity has opened up for him. Then Farhan was later pushed by his friends to convince his parents to let him continue on his passion. Though, he was scared to tell his parents about his passion, after a later time he asked his parents to at least listen to him, to let him follow his passion for wildlife photography and drop out of school. He found his strength and was able to do his passion through Ranchos constant bugging and the way he somewhat made a backhanded move by sending his works without him knowing. He thanked Rancho for giving him that chance to stand for his passion and follow his dreams. But, even after dropping out of school he was there to help and stay with his friends. He was also there to help Mona, Virus’ daughter to deliver her baby. Farhan was helping in every way that he can for the sake of Mona and the child since they were in a pinch at that time. And, it pretty much ended up well; the baby was safe and healthy. He was in their graduation to take pictures of his friends’ success. He said, he’d wanted to capture all these memories and take it home but never thought that it was the last time he was going to see Rancho again.

He was looking for his friend Rancho for 5 years, since; Rancho hasn’t kept contact with them for a very longtime and even shown up. Hearing about an information from Chatur, one of his classmates, which said that he know where Rancho is, he was really being excited and was looking forward into meeting his best friend again after a very long time. He even ditched his flight just to meet Rancho again. Clearly Farhan took up Rancho’s behavior and thinking. Farhan did learn something from Rancho and one of them was being clever and mischievous. He lied to the flight attendant by acting like he was having a heart attack just so he could stop the plane from departing. Farhan made a very bad lie just so he can meet the friend who made him honest and courageous. The person who changed him into standing up for what he really want in life. The friend who made him confident enough to tell is parents what he really wants to do with his life. Looking forward for their meeting, he hadn’t expected what waited there, that there was another Rancho which was the real one. At which who told them the story that Rancho was a gardeners son. And that Rancho isn’t really his true name. After hearing the whole story of Rancho’s past, his respect for his friend has boosted up. Learning and understanding Rancho’s story he thought that most of them were steadily thinking of having a degree, because no degree means, no good job, no pretty wife, no credit card, no social status and all of these didn’t matter to Rancho. While every single person was thinking the same thing, all Rancho had thought about was going to school and learning. He was indeed a very weird but definitely a special individual. Rancho was a very exceptional since he wasn’t thinking like common people. He has his own principles and he thinks that being true to yourself and to everybody else is better than acting all happy just to see others happy even when you are faking it. He was a really great person and a very good friend. Even after years of getting separated and without communication Farhan was still a loyal friend. He was really eager to see Rancho again just so he can express what he really feel for his friend who was very selfish and selfless all at the same time. Even when they were separated for a very long time he hadn’t forget all the experiences and the things they went through together. And he was really able to show and deliver what he really feels for Rancho after vanishing like a bubble and not showing up for a very long time, not even communicating to any of them. He also learned that the book that was published under his name was shared by Rancho to his students. He found out that even away Rancho had kept on updated about his friends’ lives especially their works and their achievements. He greeted his best friend with a smack in the face, a lot of punches and a good beating for hiding from them for years but after all those punch greetings he hugged his friend and said that he was glad to see him again.  Their bond was still there even after years; they’d never change and was still good friends with each other. True friendship can never be really masked by separation, time and distance.

Raju Rastogi is the other main character and another idiot of the story. His character seems very cautious and guarded. He doesn’t want to get involved in any trouble, which can also be described as Rancho, because he want to quietly finish and get a degree. Raju was somehow dark, gloomy and not so open to his roommates. He wore a lot of rings in his fingers believing in some kind of luck. He is the most cowardly character in the movie. He is the one who doesn’t explore new things. He would rather stay away from anybody than to be close with someone who can be the hindrance to his goal. Raju was more of a machine but, even though if Raju acts like that I can’t really blame him. He has to be for his family. He has a poor family. Raju’s father is sick, his sister can’t get married because of the dowry, in which they can’t really afford, and his mother is already retired. He is carrying the burden instead of his father. That leaves him carrying the entire burden of the family. Raju is the kind of person who would follow rules so that he won’t get into trouble which will only worsen his current situation. He would rather be in a very peaceful and boring life than to be in a loud and exciting life. In every angle Raju was the bread winner of the family.

He was avoiding Rancho at first thinking that Rancho only brings trouble wherever he goes. Raju was afraid of getting caught up in any troubles having in mind that he has problem within his family. He had a lot to think about aside from his studies, he has to always put in mind that his whole family is counting on him. I guess Raju doesn’t intend to add up to the problems he is already carrying. But, later in the movie he came to like Rancho and they became friends. He was able to do crazy things with both Farhan and Rancho. Though Raju hadn’t been completely trusting to Rancho he’d just go with Farhan and Rancho most of the time. There was also a time when he moved out of there room and he went to Chatur’s room, as recommended by Virus. But then Rancho and Farhan later made an action which made him come back to their own room. At which involving the changing of Chatur’s speech leaving him humiliated in fromt of a lot of people because of his broken translation, planted by Rancho and Farhan. By doing those actions it made Raju understand that staying with Chatur will only make things worse for him. Then there comes a time when his father had a cardiac arrest and he misunderstands the situation. He was really close-minded that time and he hadn’t thought of all the possibilities, instead he concluded immediately without thinking and looking at every angle of the situation that his father was in. He thought that Rancho bringing over his father in the hospital using only a scooter was making his father’s situation more severe, but later came to know that what Rancho did was the most helpful option. If it hadn’t been for Rancho’s fast decision making his father wouldn’t have made it and he would have felt a lot worst if he lost his father. After all that Rancho did that made him trust Rancho even more. They have become very good friends after that whole scooter incident with his father.

Little by little Raju have built up a backbone that made him trust himself a bit. His confidence level has also risen. He was able to believe that he can also do things like others could and that he was also capable. Though, the same as Farhan he can’t believe that their friend Rancho made it to the top of the class leaving them in the last of the list. He didn’t expect that Rancho would be at the top of the class since he was acting all unconcerned with his studies. But, that didn’t make him leave Rancho rather it made the three of them bonded more. And by more means that they did things to the extreme too. The 3 idiots got drunk and made a deal, if Rancho was going to tell Pia that he likes her then they would do Rancho’s bidding. So, they went to Virus’ house and Rancho confessed to Pia about how he felt then they were startled because there was Mona. Later that night they peed in front of Virus’ house where Raju was seen. On that same night the 3 idiots slept their room and they were there until morning. Then Raju was caught by Virus that he was drunk. After the incident of the 3 idiots getting drunk Raju was called in Virus’ room where he was instigated and told to either betray his friend Rancho or leave school. He was asked to type a letter to his family that he was being forced to quit school. He was very much pressured, given only 7 minutes to decide, and because of his loyalty to his friend and his love for his family he ended up jumping on the 3^rdfloor of the building, because he can’t just betray any of them. He loved his family so much that he can’t let them down and he owed Rancho a lot by saving his father and helping that he could never ever betray his friend. He was then admitted to the hospital where he ended up in a coma. Rancho and Farhan have been going to the hospital nonstop just so they can monitor and help Raju recover. It was really hard for the both of them to see their friend in that state but they were being strong and continued to talk to Raju. Rancho has done a lot of things just to have a little reaction from Raju. He showed Raju that his mother had a new sari and etc. But what made Raju wake up was the lie Rancho had said. He told Raju that finally his sister was going to get married and it was with Farhan and their wedding don’t require any dowry. That lie was really effective that Raju had manage to give a reaction and he laugh at what Rancho has done, telling a lie. After being in a coma, he slowly recovered with the help of his friends and support of his family. He has then let go of his cowardly side and made up his mind to never let the pressure get into his head. He then removed all the rings he wore as part of the deal he made with Rancho and same as Farhan. He was supposed to go to a job interview that day. After speaking with the interviewer he was asked to change his attitude, being frank, in exchange of him getting the job. But, instead of accepting the interviewer’s terms he told him that he can’t do that, if he changes his attitude it will not be him anymore so it would be better if he won’t take the job. Seeing Raju’s determination and will, the interviewers accepted him and gave him the job. The interviewers were definitely amazed that Raju declined the offer where others would have been willing to do anything just to be accepted. He was able to stand up to his principles and showed them what he was really capable of doing. Leaving his cowardly side, Raju became more determined and hard-working.

By the time Raju was accepted in the job interview Virus couldn’t accept it. He was defeated by the challenge and his beard was shaved off because of that. He was very angry and was very vengeful because he can’t accept the fact that Raju was able to be accepted in a job. Then he came up with an idea into personally making the test. So, he made the test so hard that will make Raju unsuccessful, after being humiliated by the bet he made with Rancho. Through Pia who was determined to help the 3 idiots, she went to their dorm and gave Rancho the key to Virus’ room. Later then, Farhan and Rancho took the answer keys to help Raju but then after the change he made with himself he doesn’t intend to cheat. He doesn’t want to do something that will continuously invade his conscience. He even helped Mona into delivering her baby and was the one who first mentioned the phrase “All is well” which made the baby kick and cry.

Soon after those incidents Raju graduated as an engineer making him successful and then he was able to have a good life. He really did became the bread winner of the family. He had his own blog which talks about engineering. He really did became someone he hadn’t expected him to be. Even when Virus tried a lot of things just to make him give up, after everything he became successful. However, they kept on looking for Rancho for the past 5 years since Rancho left without a word. After graduating happily and celebrating they didn’t even get to say goodbye to a dear friend. In the present, Raju, hearing about news as to the whereabouts of Rancho he immediately went to meet Chatur. He was really ecstatic into meeting his long lost friend who heled him a lot. On their travel looking for Rancho he then understands why Rancho was like that when they were still studying. Raju then realized that Rancho was in a pinch just like them but he never showed it to anyone, instead he has been showing all his crazy, mischievous and happy side. After all the traveling and the discovery they soon found where Rancho has been hiding all this time. Later, after seeing Rancho he answered Ranchos “Hi!” with a punch and a beating for being an idiot. Raju was quiet angry with what Rancho did but still friendship tops everything else. He was still Rancho’s good friend after all those years even without communication.

“Pursue excellence, and success will follow, pants down.” – Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chhanchad

I choose Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chhanchad or Rancho, out of the three idiots. In the movie, he was the one with the most unique character of all. He was incredibly different from all the other characters in the story. In his first night in their dorm he had shown his resourceful side. Since, he was tired and doesn’t bother to join in the fun of their initiation night, a senior had bothered him into joining but he didn’t listen instead he had thought of a way as to how he would make that senior stop his nonsense blabber. His resourcefulness made the blabbering senior shut up displaying his ingenious invention. He made an electric conductor using a spoon and other items. After what he did they had stop bothering him for the night. He is the only one who doesn’t act like a machine in their school. He studies but never sticks by the book. He does what he wants to do rather than having to sit by the rules. He was never like the rest, he tend to do everything that he thinks without having any second thoughts about it. Rancho may have been out of his class most of the time, because he is always kicked out by his professors but even though it is like that he would slip into other classes instead. Rancho is very smart because he doesn’t really care about the rules instead he follow what he believes that everybody has the right to learn. Since Rancho believes that first year or fourth year, it is knowledge just grab it. When everybody else fought for shower, Rancho will just look for a spot wherever that has water. Even he is bathing publicly he doesn’t care at all. He is a very confident person and smart. He is also very curious about everything and machines are his passion. In short, more like engineering was made for him. When he sees or spotted a machine he opens them though sometimes he can’t re-assemble them. Rancho likes to try things and is really industrious and passionate about engineering. He is a really talented person.

After being together with his roommates I guess he became fond of them and thought that he have found good friends in them. He thought that he will have a very fun college having found friends. He didn’t leave them behind especially when they were in a dire situation. In the middle of their problems Rancho was there to support them and helped them in any way. He didn’t betray his friend or leave them even if he was in a totally different level than them. He is indeed a good friend, he cares and believes in their potentials and has never given up on them. In times Rancho was a rule-breaker doing things that he wants to do bringing his two friends with him. I guess all Rancho wants to show to his friends is that they don’t need to act like a machine, they need to live a little. He is like a free-spirit without any chains to stop him from doing anything. Even though he accidentally brings in his friends in his mischievous acts he will make up for it by backing them up and helping them in any way he can. Rancho is also a very funny person he tends to do things that gives off happiness to others. He also helps his friends realize things that they tend to avoid being talked to or the things that they really liked but can’t seem to show it to others. He was bringing out the best and the crazy in them. Rancho helps his friends to stand on their own feet and be courageous to face the obstacle in their lives. He supports their passions, the same as he is which has the passion to learn. He is such a loyal friend, like a constant needle in a compass always pointing in the north and a very understanding one, because even if some people misunderstand the things that he does, he will just understand them for acting and thinking like that. Rancho is a very positive person who believes that “All is well”. He never gives up once he’s put his mind into it. He thinks things thoroughly while joking around at the same time.

“Learning is not memorizing the exact words from the book. Learning is understanding it and being able to explain it in your own words.” – Ranchhodas Shamaldas Chhanchad

He was really an intelligent person since he got the top rank all over. After the ranking was made Rancho even made a bet with Virus that if ever either one of his friends gets accepted in the job interview Virus will have to shave off his mustache. He was never afraid of having that bet because Rancho believes in his friends and that they can do it. Even after the incident on Raju he never gave up on him. While Raju is in the state of coma he was there cheering him up. He was doing his best to make his friend come back and get well. Rancho even supported Raju’s family and was always visiting the hospital just to keep watch of his friend. He made a lot of things just so he can see a reaction from Raju. Rancho even lied to Raju telling him that Farhan was willing to get married to his sister even without dowry just so Raju will give a reaction. After his constant babbling, Raju has gotten well and he even thanked every doctor in that hospital. He hadn’t told Farhan about him sending Farhan’s work to a famous wild life photographer. On the day of the job interview he made Farhan go home to make amends with his parents, to make him realize his true dream and to follow his passion. He even told Farhan to always keep a picture of his parents in his wallet so that he wouldn’t think of suicide if they won’t approve of his passion, because if ever he would commit suicide both his parents would cry due to his loss. While Farhan told his parents, Raju removed all his rings in his fingers. Same as both of Rancho and Farhan he did as what he promised from their bet. When both of them had successfully done their businesses they thanked Rancho. Both of his friends showed true happiness because of what happened. The bond between the three of them became even stronger. One night when Pia made her way to their dorm, telling them that his father is planning on making Raju fail graduation both Raju and Farhan made a move. Rancho even stole the key questionnaire just to help his best friend Raju so that he won’t fail the exam but was later caught by Virus who told him that he is now kicked out from school.

But, fate really had its ways, working, another event happened where Mona, the daughter of Virus was ready to deliver her baby. But, there was a very strong storm that made the ambulance impossible to travel to their location. They didn’t know what to do next because they can’t find any help due to the storm. By contacting Pia, Virus’ another daughter Rancho operated the delivery. He ordered his friends to get what was needed. Even the invention he had made which is an inverter, where in the name of Virus was used, to help in the getting back of the power since there was a black out. Rancho made a suction cap due to fact that Mona was in a state of fatigue and she is not capable of pushing the baby out. They were able to get the power back using the car batteries, the inverter and the things they found in the common room. The delivery was successful with the help of Ranchos friends and Pia’s. Though, the baby didn’t cry so they thought they didn’t make it. But after Raju chanted Rancho’s calming mantra “All is well” the baby kicked. He was really a great kicker and so Virus didn’t mind him not being an engineer instead he can be all he wanted to be. That made everyone happy, after the little celebration Rancho got out of the room bringing with him his luggage and was then followed by Virus. Virus then told Rancho that he was an extraordinary student, also told him that he can’t always be right, then Virus gave Rancho the Astronaut pen as a sign of excellence and told him to continue his studies. Virus also told him that a pencil can’t be used in the outer space due to the fact that there is a possibility that the tip might be broken and could get into the astronauts eyes, nose or even in the instruments due to zero gravity. Even then Virus had acknowledge him as an exemplary student. So, from then on Rancho graduated as the top of the class but later vanished without saying a single goodbye.

Rancho was only posing for another person. He wasn’t really Rancho instead he was called as Chhote when he was younger. He didn’t really care about titles and diplomas so long as he gets to go to school and learn things. Rancho wasn’t really concerned whether he gets a diploma or not. He was an independent individual going to school having another person’s identity and he was strong-willed pursuing what he really wants without having any other exchange except learning. Rancho would rather go to school and learn than he won’t learn anything. It was really a great chance that Rancho got an exchange with the father of the true Rancho. In the present he really became a very successful person. He became a scientist and had 400 patents and also became a school teacher. Rancho was really into people learning, he believes that knowledge is power because it can never be taken away from you. It is a treasure worth keeping and a very great investment. His passion never really went off. He was still himself, even sharing his friends success to the kids he was teaching. Sharing Raju’s blogs and reading Farhan’s books. He even sent a train ticket to Millimeter so that he could study with him. It was even funny that after Millimeter followed Rancho he evolved and was later then called as Centimeter. He continued to look on to his friends’ success even if he had to leave. His love for his friends even when they are away was really strong and that he can never forget all the experiences they have been through when they were still in their college days. Rancho never forgot he was still the clever, mischievous and funny person.

“Make your passion your profession, and work will become a game.” – Ranchhodas Shamaldas Chhanchad

The 3 main characters of the movie have their own unique sides. These sides made them noticeable and nice. They might have differences but the 3 of them have something in common, their loyalty. They were also called as idiots that also counts as a thing that they have in common. When looking back on the three of them. Farhan is the one who tolerates, laughs in the side, the obedient and the simple or average character in the story. Raju on the other hand was the one with the lowest self-esteem, the coward, the doubtful, the frank and later the hard-working and loyal. While, Rancho is the intelligent, resourceful, independent, strong-willed, clever, funny, care-free, unique, and most of all a very understanding good friend. The three of them has filled the gap between them. While Farhan and Raju lack something Rancho filled it and the same goes for Rancho and the others. They each fill the gaps of one another and that’s why they have built a very strong bond. Their friendship was challenged by time and distance however they have never changed, instead their friendship endured. Truth be told some would think the other way and forget their friends after college but them? They never did and, they even lied and did something a normal person with normal mentality wouldn’t have done. They stopped a plane from flying, they tied up a former classmate, they threatened a person mourning, they gate crashed a wedding and stole the bride all for finding a friend who vanished into thin air. Imagine how a friendship like that could do. I hope that people can also find bonds like that. Aside from bonds they also found out that life isn’t just by simply following the norm it is about living. Rancho taught both his friends how to live a regret free life. Some people are living a life just because they have to and not because they want to. It is very important that we understand that we can’t or we will never be satisfied with a life chosen by others. We should always keep in mind that even though we are just following our parents’ orders, just following, won’t satisfy our thirst for our passion. Sooner or later we will find a way to it but why go through a lengthy process when you can achieve it just by asking? That’s what Rancho is trying to deliver, why would you stay to a course when you are not happy and satisfied? Why can’t you just be honest and get on with it? That’s one of the things that he taught to Farhan. If you are not happy say it, don’t keep it bottled up. While Raju was taught that you can always count on your friends, especially when your world turns upside down. Trust and believe that everything will be okay and that there are people whom you can always count on. The movie had a lot of lessons to give and the characters can move the one watching the movie. It is one of the best and it will make you believe that “All is well”.
